How They Met
In August of 2021, fate brought Matthew Wirken back to Kansas City after years of living in different cities while playing Major League Rugby. Little did he know, a quiet Sunday Funday at a bar called Society would change his life forever.
That’s where he met Bailey Warlen. Dressed head-to-toe in a full golf outfit, Bailey had just come from a day on the course with her dad, looking every bit like she belonged on the LPGA Tour. The two hit it off immediately, spending the entire day together, talking and laughing as if they’d known each other for years.
But Bailey wasn’t going to make things too easy for Matt—she wouldn’t give him her number or even a kiss goodbye. However, she did take his number before they said goodbye. Despite her initial resistance, there was one undeniable moment that night. During one of their many playful conversations, they joked about how, if they ever got married, Bailey’s last name would only need to change by two letters. It was a lighthearted moment, but one that hinted at the connection they already felt.
The very next morning, Bailey surprised herself by texting Matt bright and early. From that moment on, their story unfolded naturally, and their bond grew quickly and deeply.
About the Relationship
With the Plaza as the backdrop to their early days, Matthew and Bailey’s love began to bloom. It didn’t take long for them to realize they had something undeniably unique.
In the fall of 2022, the couple took their next big step, moving into a house together in Waldo. Their home became a cozy haven, where love and laughter filled every corner and entertaining brought friends and family together. In July of 2024, they expanded their little family, bringing home their first "daughter"—a playful and loving golden retriever named Daisy.
As self-proclaimed foodies, they love trying new restaurants and discovering hidden culinary gems around Kansas City. But some of their favorite moments happen in their own kitchen cooking a meal together.
Their love for Kansas City extends beyond food—Matthew and Bailey are proud Chiefs fans! From the very beginning, they made attending Chiefs games a tradition, cheering on their team during some of the most exciting seasons in franchise history, including championship wins. Tailgating with friends on the iconic Beags Bus has been the cherry on top of every game day.
Bailey is an avid golfer, and it didn’t take long for Matthew to pick up a set of clubs and join her on the links. Now, golf is one of their favorite activities, a hobby they wish they could enjoy year-round.
And when it’s time to unwind, there’s nothing quite like a good martini to celebrate the day—whether it’s a dirty martini (with blue cheese olives) or an espresso martini, it’s a shared indulgence that’s become a signature.
Through their adventures, hobbies, and everyday joys, Matthew and Bailey have created a life filled with love, laughter, and plenty of flavor.
About the Engagement
Nearly three years to the day after their first date, on September 1, 2024, Matt planned a moment Bailey would never forget. Under the guise of a photo shoot with their beloved Daisy in the rose garden of Loose Park, Matt surprised Bailey with a life-changing question.
At the end of the photo session, with the picturesque roses as their witness, Matt got down on one knee and asked Bailey to marry him. It was a perfect moment, capturing the essence of their love story—a beautiful blend of thoughtfulness, joy, and a little bit of Daisy magic.
Now, they’re eagerly counting down the days to say “I do” and begin the next chapter of their adventure together!
